St Ives, Cornwall
St Ives lies north of Penzance, and west of Camborne in Cornwall, England. Originally dependent on fishing as an industry, a recent shift in commercial emphasis has meant St Ives is now primarily a holiday resort and was named best seaside town of 2007 by the Guardian.
Famous for Art
Famous for art and artists, St Ives has a number of small art galleries, and also the Tate St Ives, which is undoubtedly Cornwall's best known gallery. The Tate not only shows the best of modern art in the areas and atmosphere in which it was created, but also has changing exhibitions of the best of contemporary Cornish art. Since the Tate's opening in 1993 many more galleries have sprung up around St Ives, supporting its long artistic tradition. The first artists began arriving in the nineteenth century - the original attraction of pure light and unspoiled charm still holding true today.
Famous for Beaches
St Ives is almost surrounded by the sea, with three golden sandy beaches facing different directions within a few hundred yards of one other - some offer lifeguard services and dogs are banned from easter to october, keeping them safe and clean. There are also a number of fantastic beaches in the surrounding areas too.
Famous for Food and Drink
St Ives is well known for it's great seafood and welcoming traditional pubs - we'd write about a few recommendations, but they're all so good that you'll have to find your own favourite - watch out for their fresh catch of the day - literally caught that very day!
